Superintendent Dr. Angel Turner will leave Evanston/Skokie School District 65 on Monday, June 30, after the Board of Education approved a mutual separation agreement at its Monday, June 22, meeting.

The departure ends Turner's five-year tenure with the district, where she served as Director of Literacy, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, and Superintendent.

Board President Nichole Pinkard and Vice President Chris Van Nostrand credited Turner with averting a financial crisis shortly after she took the helm. Turner brought in financial consultant Dr. Robert Grossi to surface what Pinkard and Van Nostrand called "previously unknown budget issues" in their letter to the community. She then launched the Structural Deficit Reduction Plan that has cut nearly $20 million and eliminated 130 full-time positions across the district.

Turner also oversaw the Foster School rebuild in Evanston's Fifth Ward. When the original K-8 proposal proved too expensive, she led the redesign to a K-5 school that stayed on time and on budget. Foster, which closed in 1979, is set to open for the 2026-27 school year, returning a neighborhood school to the only ward in Evanston without one.

The board's letter said Turner's work "has positioned us to move forward with a re-envisioning of District 65."

Turner's departure coincides with that of Chief Financial Officer Tamara Mitchell, who also leaves June 30. The district has not announced an interim superintendent or a timeline for a permanent search.

District 65 still faces $6.3 million in additional budget reductions for the coming school year.
