Two Evanston intersections will close to traffic from Friday, Aug. 28, through Sunday, Aug. 30, as volunteers paint crosswalk murals through the city's Love Your Block program.

The first project begins Friday at Callan Avenue and Mulford Street. Painters will work from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day through Sunday, filling the crosswalk with images of native wildflowers and pollinators. The painting area spans Callan Avenue between Kee Lee Tot Lot and Elks Park. Neighbors who don't want to pick up a brush can stop by to watch the work in progress.

The second event, called "Slow Down on Elmwood," runs Sunday, Aug. 30, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Elmwood Avenue and Monroe Street. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join. No painting experience is needed, according to the city's announcement.

Residents near either site should plan for closures. The Elmwood event will shut down intersections at Ridge Avenue and Monroe Street, Elmwood Avenue and Madison Street, Elmwood Avenue and Monroe Street, and Elmwood Avenue and Reba Place. Alleys will also close on Monroe between Ridge and Elmwood, on Elmwood between Monroe and Madison, and on Elmwood between Monroe and Reba Place.

The Callan/Mulford site will have street closures on Callan Avenue and Mulford Street for all three days.

The city published details for both events on Tuesday, Aug. 25. No design details for the Elmwood mural have been released publicly. The Callan/Mulford project's wildflower-and-pollinator theme is the only design described in the city's notice.
