Evanston voters will choose between three candidates for Illinois governor when polls open at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat seeking a third term, faces Republican Darren Bailey and independent Collin Corbett. Polls close at 7 p.m., and voters in line by that time may still cast ballots, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
No results are available yet. Results will not be posted until after polls close Tuesday night.
The candidates
The race is a rematch. Pritzker defeated Bailey in 2022 by nearly 13 percentage points, according to WGN-TV's voter guide.
J.B. Pritzker (Democrat) first won the governor's office in 2018. His running mate is Deputy Gov. Christian Mitchell, who replaced Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton after she entered the U.S. Senate race. According to his campaign, Pritzker's priorities include addressing affordability, creating jobs and protecting individual rights.
Darren Bailey (Republican) is a farmer from southern Illinois who previously represented the 109th District in the Illinois House. His running mate is Aaron Del Mar, a Palatine businessman and former village council member. According to his campaign, Bailey's priorities include lowering the cost of living, reducing property taxes and strengthening public safety. President Donald Trump endorsed Bailey in September, according to WGN-TV.
Collin Corbett (Independent) is a Palatine political consultant and former Republican strategist. His running mate is Carolyn Schofield. Corbett left the Republican Party earlier this year, arguing that many Illinois voters feel unrepresented by the two major parties.
What's at stake
A Pritzker win would extend Democratic control of the governor's office, which the party has held since 2019, according to MultiState. The last Republican governor was Bruce Rauner, who served from 2015 to 2019.
Affordability has dominated the final stretch. Bailey has pointed to property taxes and the cost of living as central issues. Pritzker has cited raising the state minimum wage from $8.25 to $15 an hour and ending the state grocery tax, ABC 7 reported.
The two clashed over the SAFE-T Act, the 2021 law that eliminated cash bail, during their only debate Oct. 13 on WTTW, Capitol News Illinois reported. Bailey has campaigned on repealing the law. Other debate topics included state spending, a new Bears stadium and data centers.
Corbett was excluded from the debate based on poll numbers.
Pre-election polling
An ActiVote poll conducted Oct. 23 through Oct. 31 among 400 likely midterm voters found Pritzker leading Bailey by 18 percentage points, with an average expected error of 4.9 percentage points.
Pritzker holds a large fundraising advantage. He spent nearly $23.8 million from July through September, compared with about $941,000 by Bailey's committee, and entered October with about $44.4 million on hand to Bailey's $482,000, according to MultiState.
