Northwestern's official football account introduced running back Mar'Kel Porter to the fan base Monday, July 21, posting a player profile video on X with the caption: "Going 1-0, every day."

Porter, a redshirt sophomore wearing No. 7, transferred to Evanston from Bowling Green, where he carried the ball 31 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns in 2025, according to ESPN. He also caught seven passes for 70 yards. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 225 pounds, the Lancaster, Texas, product brings a physical frame to a backfield that head coach David Braun restocked through the transfer portal this offseason.

He is one of two portal backs Northwestern added. The other, graduate transfer Gavin Sawchuk from Florida State, rushed 109 times for 486 yards and eight touchdowns for the Seminoles in 2025, per the NU athletics roster. Both join returning starter Caleb Komolafe, whose 941 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns last season were the most by any player in the Braun era, earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention according to NUSports.com.

A Northwestern Athletics Instagram post on July 7 projected Porter at RB4 on an early unofficial depth chart, meaning his path to carries runs through a loaded room. But offensive coordinator Chip Kelly told reporters during a July 21 media tour of the new Ryan Field that training camp will sort out roles.

"It's those guys getting a feel for our system and how we do it, and us really understanding them," Kelly said. "Saying, 'Hey, he's really good at this, so let's feature this a little bit more.'"

Kelly, who won national coach of the year honors at Oregon in 2010 and coordinated Ohio State's 2024 national championship offense, will have two weeks with the full roster before Northwestern opens the season Saturday, September 5, against South Dakota State at Martin Stadium.

The Wildcats finished 7-6 in 2025 and won the GameAbove Sports Bowl. They retained 27 of 30 players with eligibility who logged more than 100 meaningful snaps, per the Chicago Tribune, and added quarterback Aidan Chiles from Michigan State to pair with the revamped backfield.

Training camp opens Tuesday, August 4, with the program's biggest prize waiting on the other side: the Friday, October 2, debut of the $875 million Ryan Field against Penn State, airing on Fox.
