Northwestern head coach David Braun addressed the media Saturday, Aug. 8, as the Wildcats opened fall camp for the 2026 season, marking the program's first official practice availability with the new Ryan Field's inaugural game against Penn State now less than eight weeks away.
The session, posted by Northwestern Football on X, comes days after Braun set an aggressive tone at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago on July 30, where he declared championship expectations and challenged Evanston fans to fill the $870 million, 35,000-seat stadium when it opens Friday, Oct. 2.
"It's my job to put the best team in that stadium," Braun said at Media Days, as reported by the Daily Northwestern on Aug. 6. "But it's your job, Northwestern students, Northwestern community, Northwestern fan base, Evanston, Chicagoland, to turn new Ryan Field into the best home field advantage in all of college football."
The quarterback question
The biggest storyline entering camp: who starts under center in Chip Kelly's offense. Braun said at Media Days on July 30 that the quarterback depth is "the best I've ever felt since I've been here at Northwestern," but that the competition would play out during August practices. Michigan State transfer Aidan Chiles, returning backup Ryan Boe and West Virginia transfer Nicco Marchiol are all in the mix, according to Inside NU's Media Days coverage.
The urgency is real. Northwestern ranked 96th nationally in total offense last season at 346.1 yards per game, and Braun hired Kelly, the former UCLA and Oregon head coach, specifically to fix it. Kelly's system will get its first live reps in camp.
Roster retention fuels optimism
Braun enters camp with 88 percent of eligible returning snaps back in Evanston, a figure he called "everything in college football right now" at Media Days. The returning core includes running back Caleb Komolafe (941 yards, 11 touchdowns in 2025), wide receiver Griffin Wilde (71 catches, 880 yards, eight touchdowns) and safety Robert Fitzgerald (111 tackles).
Transfer kicker Jackson Kleather, a 2025 Lou Groza Award semifinalist who hit from 56 yards at Bowling Green, landed on the 2026 Groza watch list. Graduate center Jackson Carsello earned a spot on the Rimington Trophy watch list, which honors the nation's top center.
What's ahead
The Wildcats open the season Sept. 5 against South Dakota State before the marquee Ryan Field debut against Penn State on Oct. 2. ESPN's SP+ projects Northwestern at 5.4 wins, ranking them 16th in the Big Ten, but Braun has made clear he's aiming higher. At Media Days he put it bluntly: "Big Ten championship, why not us? Host a College Football Playoff game at new Ryan Field, why not us?"
The next eight weeks of camp will determine whether the roster can match the ambition. Northwestern's first depth chart is expected ahead of the Sept. 5 opener.
