Northwestern opens its 2026 football season Saturday, Sept. 5 against South Dakota State at Martin Stadium, carrying a retooled roster, a new offensive identity and a schedule that national projections say could keep the Wildcats near .500.

But coach David Braun isn't buying the modest forecasts.

"Big Ten Championship? Why not us? Hosting a College Football Playoff game at new Ryan Field? Why not us?" Braun said at Big Ten Media Days on July 30 in Chicago. "Aspire to chase down a national championship? Why not us?"

The boldness isn't baseless. Northwestern finished 7-6 in 2025, capped by a 34-7 bowl win over Central Michigan, and Braun retained 27 of 30 players who logged more than 100 meaningful snaps. That 88 percent retention rate leads the Big Ten, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Still, the numbers tell a cautionary story. ESPN's SP+ model projects Northwestern 49th nationally with an average of 5.4 wins, and the Wildcats' schedule ranks sixth-toughest in the country by that same metric, ESPN reported. Analyst Phil Steele rates it the 14th-hardest schedule nationally, per the Daily Northwestern. The conference slate includes road trips to Ohio State, Oregon and reigning national champion Indiana, plus home dates against Penn State, Iowa and Illinois.

DraftKings set the Wildcats' over/under win total at 5.5, with both Athlon Sports analysts picking the over, according to Yahoo Sports.

The offensive overhaul

The biggest change sits in the coaching box. Braun hired Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator after Kelly helped Ohio State win the 2024 national championship. Northwestern's offense hasn't ranked in the top 80 of SP+ since 2018.

"Arguably the best offensive coordinator in college football history made a decision to choose Northwestern," Braun said at Media Days, per CBS Sports.

Under center, transfer quarterback Aidan Chiles arrives from Michigan State with more than 4,000 career passing yards and a prior relationship with Kelly, who recruited him out of high school at UCLA. Redshirt junior Nicco Marchiol transferred in from West Virginia, giving the quarterback room two Power Four starters alongside returning backup Ryan Boe. As of July 30, Braun had not named a starter.

Kelly, speaking at a July 21 media availability on the Ryan Field construction site, described the installation process with Chiles: "It's those guys getting a feel for our system and how we do it, and us really understanding them," he told the Tribune.

Running back Caleb Komolafe returns after rushing for 941 yards and earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention in 2025. The Wildcats also added running back Gavin Sawchuk from Florida State and three offensive linemen who average 6-foot-7 and 328 pounds.

Returning talent and a stout defense

The defense, which held opponents to under 20 points per game and ranked 30th in SP+ last season, brings back All-Big Ten safety Robert Fitzgerald. On the offensive side, senior wide receiver Griffin Wilde returns as an All-Big Ten selection.

Wilde embraced the schedule challenge at Media Days on July 30: "We have the opportunity to play the best of the best. This is the schedule to go do that. We can go prove ourselves this year."

Ryan Field looms

The Wildcats play their first three games at Martin Stadium before moving into the $875 million, 35,000-seat Ryan Field on Central Street for its inaugural game Friday, Oct. 2 against Penn State on Fox. That date marks exactly 100 years since the original NU Stadium hosted its first football game.

As we reported Aug. 9, Braun called on Evanston and Chicagoland fans to fill the new venue. "It's your job, Northwestern students, Northwestern community, Northwestern fan base, Evanston, Chicagoland, to turn new Ryan Field into the best home field advantage in all of college football," he said at Media Days on July 30, as reported by the Daily Northwestern on Aug. 6.

The stadium will also host the Evanston Township High School vs. New Trier rivalry game and community events beyond football.

Northwestern travels to Colorado after the opener before returning to Evanston for the Ryan Field debut against Penn State on Oct. 2.
