Some technology systems at Evanston Township High School remain limited nearly a month after a June 7 ransomware attack crippled the district's digital infrastructure, even as phone service and summer programming have resumed.
District 202 Superintendent Marcus Campbell said in a statement reported by Evanston Now that cybersecurity experts are "rebuilding and hardening the school's technology infrastructure and will restore remaining services cautiously, keeping the Evanston community updated before the new school year."
Phone lines, knocked out for nearly three weeks, were restored Friday, June 26. But other systems have not fully recovered. The attack disrupted internet access, district Google accounts, the Home Access Center parent portal, and emergency communication tools.
What happened
The ransomware attack struck Sunday, June 7, forcing ETHS to close Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9. All summer school classes, sports camps, and on-campus activities were canceled for those two days.
Director of Communications Reine Hanna said the closure was necessary because the attack had knocked out "systems that are critical to safely operating campus," including network, phone, and emergency services. The district engaged external forensic cybersecurity experts and legal counsel immediately, and is cooperating with the FBI, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
Hanna said this was the first time District 202 had experienced a ransomware attack.
ETHS reopened Wednesday, June 10, and the district announced there would be no make-up days for the missed sessions. Summer school proceeded on its original schedule, Evanston Now reported June 11.
What's still unknown
The district has not disclosed whether a ransom was paid, who carried out the attack, or the full scope of data that may have been compromised. As of June 8, Hanna said the investigation was ongoing and the district did not yet know what data may have been impacted. No public update on that question has followed.
What comes next
Campbell has not announced a target date for full restoration of all systems. The district's official cybersecurity incident page at eths202.org/CybersecurityIncident, last updated Thursday, June 25, remains the designated source for recovery updates.
The ETHS attack came amid a broader wave of school cyberattacks, including a mass global attack on the Canvas learning platform in May 2026 that affected Northwestern University in Evanston, according to the Chicago Tribune.
