A family-owned laundromat on the Dempster Street corridor is set to open near Evanston's western border on Friday, July 17, 2026, adding laundry capacity after a notable closure thinned options in the area.

USA Laundromat, at 4744 Dempster St. in Skokie, will hold its grand opening celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon. The event runs until 10:00 p.m., according to the business's event listings on Patch and AllEvents.

The business, owned by Linus Macwan, lists Evanston among its primary service communities on its website, alongside Skokie, Morton Grove, Park Ridge, Lincolnwood, Glenview, and Niles. The location sits just west of the Evanston-Skokie border on Dempster.

USA Laundromat offers self-service coin laundry, wash-dry-fold drop-off with 24- and 48-hour turnaround options, pickup and delivery, and commercial laundry for businesses including salons, restaurants, and Airbnb hosts, according to its website. Equipment includes new Electrolux high-capacity washers and dryers. Hours are 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, with an attendant on site during all operating hours.

Amenities include free WiFi, a parking lot, security cameras, and vending machines. Machines accept cash, credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

Grand opening perks

The first 250 customers on Friday, July 17, will receive a free $5 laundry card, and the first 100 will get a free laundry bag, according to the Patch event listing. Free pizza and drinks from Sarpino's Pizzeria will be available, along with giveaways including pens, keychains, and magnets.

Context: fewer laundromats nearby

Good News Laundromat at 817 Noyes St. in Evanston closed on May 31, 2024, after 50 years of operation. Owner Jeffrey Kelly cited insufficient revenue to cover operating costs in a posted notice at the time.

As of June 2024, the Evanston RoundTable reported only four laundromats remained in Evanston: Clothes Pin Coin Laundry at 739 Howard St., Dreamland Clean & Wash at 807 Howard St., McCormick Laundromat at 3347 Golf Road, and Bib 'n' Tucker at 801 Main St. That count may have shifted since. The RoundTable noted at the time that there were no laundromats in the Evanston area north of Dempster Street and east of McCormick Boulevard.

The Laundry Cafe at 2223 Washington St. has since opened, though USA Laundromat's Dempster Street location puts it closer to Evanston residents on the city's western and southern edges.
